A “two-stage” oncological surgery procedure performed at the Santa Maria alle Scotte hospital in Siena. The procedures are in fact the result of an important collaboration between professionals belonging to different branches of medicine, surgery and oncology, with a view to multidisciplinary treatment of patients. On a woman suffering from colorectal cancer, the first thing that was done was to remove a liver metastasis from a very critical area near the vena cava, a large vascular structure behind the liver. Subsequently, approximately two months later and after having ascertained the success of the first operation, the primary intestinal tumor was removed.
